The tenor Carlo Cazals

Even though his passion for painting left him little time for his second great talent – his voice – there were a few public performances, such as here at the Altonaer Allee Theater in Hamburg. His first record was made in 1964, when he was just 16 years old. You can listen to an excerpt from this sound document here:

And those who were lucky were able to hear him in one of his aria evenings, which he organized in various castles and manor houses for an intimate circle of listeners. Here is a small recording, unfortunately the sound quality is not very good.

A particularly unusual project was his participation with the Krautrock band FAUST, a group of musicians who were as unconventional as Cazals. In three concerts, Cazals stood on scaffolding above the band and sang opera arias to match the punk sounds of the avant-garde band, while painting a large canvas. The resulting works have been preserved. Here is a sound document. From minute 10 it gets a bit more melodic and you can hear Cazals’ voice very well in the background.

This work was created during a FAUST concert, where Cazals stood on a lifting platform, painted and sang opera arias
